Crazy store history

crazy store timeline

In 1995, the entrepreneurial Broomberg brothers, Ryan and Glen, opened the first R10 Store in Edenvale, Johannesburg, followed by a second store in Parow, Cape Town in March 1996.

The Melbro Group, a venerable wholesaling concern with roots dating back to the late 19th century, saw the potential in the fledgling project and got involved from early on, eventually acquiring a 50% stake.
Rapid growth followed, with store numbers burgeoning to 40 by the end of 1996. At the time the Rand was relatively strong at R3 to the US dollar, and this meant ample stock could be offered at under the R10 threshold.
After the market crisis struck in 1997, the Rand cracked and the R10 cap could no longer hold. By 1999, The R10 Store became The Crazy Store, a sane and unCrazy decision.

The same year saw a change of ownership with Melbro acquiring 100% control.
The Crazy Store then began a rapid expansion beyond major urban areas – today almost half of the stores are in rural and peri-urban areas.
In 2004, the 100th Crazy Store opened in Access Park, Cape Town with a fresh new look and store experience.
In 2006, we made our first foray outside of SA with a Crazy Store opening in Windhoek, Namibia. We now have 11 Namibian stores. Next stop, an African expansion.
In 2011 we hit another big landmark, opening our 200th store in Canal Walk, Cape Town, showing how demand for the brand and its offering was growing in large malls and shopping centres. Landlords are also crazy for Crazy, thanks to its value based merchandise and inviting store formats.
As the rising cost of living began impacting more and more on consumer spending power the Brand continued to see increasing demand for its value for money merchandise. We began working on a smaller express store concept that would enable us to gain a footprint in even more shopping centres.

In October 2013 we launched our first express store at the Howard Centre in Pinelands, Cape Town. These stores proved an instant hit and by the end of November 2014 we had already opened 13 culminating with our 250th store at San Ridge Square in Midrand.

In April 2017 The Crazy Store celebrated its 300th store opening in Kyalami Corner Shopping Centre, Midrand, Johannesburg. With proven customer (and landlord) enthusiasm, and with a committed and experienced team from top to bottom, we are proud to be a trusted and loved South African brand. The celebrations didn't end there, as we celebrated the opening of our first store in Gaborone, Botswana in May.
